There are many environmental factors and lifestyle choices that can lead to pulmonary fibrosis such as working in occupations where you might be exposed to fine dust particles, toxins, and chemicals. Smoking is also a risk factor. Having an autoimmune disease puts you at a higher risk of developing PF. Some medications and treatments such as chemotherapy can also lead to the disease. When no cause for the onset of pulmonary fibrosis can be found, it is called idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF).
