Living with PF: Pneumonia and RSV vaccines
In my home province in Canada, not everyone is eligible for the pneumonia or RSV vaccine. There are certain criteria that qualify you to receive the vaccine under the provincial healthcare plan, including being over 65 or being a young infant. Certain medical conditions qualify you as well.
Many patients, given the median age of people with IPF, quality for these vaccines at no cost but I wanted to make a post for those of us in early-mid adulthood who also have IPF. I ended up really sick and in the ICU in December with the recommendation to get both the RSV and pneumonia vaccine upon recovering.
When I priced them out, together they were nearly $500 if not covered by my provincial health insurance. Thankfully, IPF qualified me to receive both free of cost. Just this week I was talking to a fellow patient with IPF who is under 65 and she didn’t know IPF qualified her for these vaccines, so I wanted to share this information with the forums.
Have you had any trouble receiving the pneumonia or RSV vaccines for free as an IPF patient?
