I know artificial intelligence (AI) is a hot topic lately, especially with the myriad of platforms like ChatGPT, Google Gemini, and Microsoft’s Co-Pilot. I always urge people to consult first and foremost with their doctors and other allied healthcare professionals when seeking medical advice, but I’m hearing more and more stories of how AI can be helpful in navigating medical scenarios, too!

Recently, I was dealing with an unusual side effect, and I wasn’t looking to AI to tell me the cause of it or give me an answer instead of my doctor; however, I used it to help me gather my thoughts and present my concerns in a cohesive, organized way to my medical team. It was incredibly helpful, and it (I used ChatGPT) even prompted me with some questions to deepen its understanding of what was going on, to then generate even more in-depth information for me. It certainly got me thinking about the various uses of AI in the rare disease world!

What are your thoughts on AI in general?

Have you ever used it to navigate something related to your pulmonary fibrosis journey?

    Charlene,

I recently read an AI result where the engine was provided the results of a PFT and was asked to explain the results. The results were easy to understand and based on 8 years of experience reading my own PFTs it was accurate. I am not ready to turn my healthcare over to AI but I might use it to explain something complex in simpler terms. Good to see you!

I was recently having trouble composing the details of my health concerns in a more succinct manner. The patient portal used by the office to which I was addressing my missive had a character limit for the space into which I was to type it. I tend to be a bit verbose, as I was taught years ago to explain more rather than less if I need the reader to understand clearly. Well, I don’t know which AI system I was on, but I pasted my draft into that program and asked for a more succinct composition. I didn’t just get that. Instead, I got three different compositions of varied styles and lengths, each one easily able to fit where it needed to go. I chose the one that I felt best fit the occasion, and had less than a minute of editing to make it perfect, IMHO. I think I will make more use of the stuff as it matures, and will share my experiences with friends and family when the topic comes around. I also plan to get more sleep, and prepare earlier, so I don’t let my rambling brain work it’s way down to my fingers on the keyboard quite so profusely!

    Hi,

I use Chapgpt and other AI’s a lot. In my experience, they are very good to provide integrated medical answers. Sometimes I think, each doctor knows there own field but integrated care is hard.

I now ask lots of questions to ChatGPT. It can read x-rays, pdf etc . so worth exploring it. Never can replace your doctors but good tool to get lots of answers.

I have been using AI extensively the past couple months on many subject matters. It has helped me a lot in understanding my complicated health situation. After comparing the results of five AI apps, I now use Gemini (Google) for most questions.

Hi, I use the free version platform Perplexity and I recommend it.

I asked “Perplexity” to describe itself..here’s the answer:

“Perplexity is an advanced AI-powered search and answer platform. It combines the latest artificial intelligence models with real-time internet searches to help users quickly find accurate, well-sourced answers to any question.”

I’ve been using ChatGPT regularily since I was first diagnosed over a year ago. It has helped me enormously to understand the disease and to cope with it. I’ve also used it to help me with different PT exercises for my knee arthritis and a million other questions about a variety of topics. On occasion, it may say something questionable but with medical issues I haven’t yet found anything seriously problematic. I certainly would trust the opinion of my pulmonologist over ChatGPT but it is nice to have such a good resource available.
Another thing I just started using it for is as a virtual personal counselor – to have feedback about emotional concerns and related. I was totally amazed at how good it was. There are ways to prompt for this that make it better for your particular situation and needs.
