    Hello Forum Members!

I found this very fascinating to read today, and wanted to share it with all of you.

According to a very recent study (2018) published in a journal from the American College of Chest Physicians, IPF outcomes are improved through the treatment of GER (gastroesophageal reflux) in patients. The journal was published by Canadian physicians at the University Health Network after a systemic review of the overall treatment of GER in patients with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF).

Below is the summary of the abstract which outlines the objective of the study. As part of the results summary of this study, it was determined that the pharmacologic treatment of GER was associated with a reduction in IPF-related mortality, as compared to no treatment for GER. The full article can be found here, as a free PDF version: http://journal.chestnet.org/article/S0012-3692(18)30415-X/pdf

STUDY BACKGROUND (verbatim, copy & pasted):

Gastroesophageal reflux (GER) is common in patients with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) and has been proposed as a potential contributor to disease progression and exacerbation. Whether treatment of GER improves health outcomes in patients with IPF is controversial. Our objective was to review the efficacy and safety of GER treatments in IPF.

    • Have you ever been tested and/or treated for GER (also known as GERD) since your IPF diagnosis?
    • Has your physician ever mentioned any type of correlation between the two?
    • Are you symptomatic of GERD? If so, what alleviates your symptoms?

Some wonderful forum members have already shared some of their experiences with us of GERD and I’d love to hear from others!

    Warm regards,
    Charlene.
