    Hello Sam,

No, laser therapy is not new.  It was approved in the US in 2003 but was in use in Europe for 30 years before that.  It is VERY well researched, thousands of scientific studies have been done.  To learn more about it go to my website:  summit-chiropactic.com     You can click on Laser therapy and also for IPF you can click on IPF laser study.

I would be happy to answer any questions that you have.

I would like to let everyone know about what is happening with laser therapy for the Covid 19.  Earlier in the week I was contacted by Dr Barabas from St Thomas hospital in London.  (same hospital where Prime Minister Boris Johnson is being treated).  He asked if I would be willing to join a working group of international doctors that are/will be using laser for the virus due to our work with IPF/lung disease patients.  I told him that not only am I willing but am honored to be asked to join the group of experts in laser therapy.  I was the only American invited to join the group.  In the first meeting of doctors they asked me about our protocol.  It was decided that they would use the protocol that Dr McGinnis and I developed with some modification of part of it regarding our chronic portion and change it to acute for the virus patients.  They have already started treating patients in Italy and Malaysia and the UK will be starting shortly.  I am anxiously awaiting to hear how the virus patients respond to laser.  All the doctors in the working group feel that this is a very promising treatment as research has shown that laser will stop the replication of viruses including Covid viruses and the well known reduction of inflammation and edema.  It’s the lung edema that is killing the patients.  We also may find that the virus patients may prevent any other problems like PF that we have concerns about.

Laser therapy is considered ‘alternative care’ in North America, but it is and has been ‘mainstream’ in the UK and Europe for decades. They are not so tied to Big Pharma there as we are in the US.   St Thomas hospital has 2 K-lasers and nearly all hospitals in Europe have lasers.  I know of only 2 hospitals in the entire US that have lasers.

I am anxious to hear of the outcomes assessments from the doctors treating the Covid 19 patients and will update after our future working group meetings.

    @rlobrien

    Hi Rand,

Laser therapy is very well known to reduce inflammation and promotes healing.  We have found it very helpful for the vast majority of PF patients.  I am a Chiropractor and have been using laser therapy in my practice since the FDA approved it in 2004.  When I was diagnosed with IPF 6 years ago I started on laser therapy.  My next 2 PFT’s had actually improved.  I am still stable after 6 years, I continue with the laser on a weekly basis. No drugs.  My O2 remains at 97.  I have had no real progression of the disease.  Due to all the patients that had positive results with it I started a research project on laser therapy for IPF patients.  I continue to refer patients to laser therapy providers, having referred over 300 to date.  I know of only 3-4 patients that claim to have no objective or subjective changes with laser therapy.  Laser therapy is NOT a cure but another way to manage the disease and we find that the majority stay stable.

If you go to my website you can learn more details about laser therapy.  Go to summit-chiropractic.com  then click on IPF.  I hope this answers most of your questions on this subject.

Thanks for the update John, so great to hear you are still doing well and stable.

I know things really slowed down on the laser therapy thread on PFN, but I have still been very busy referring IPF patients to laser therapy providers,  just referred another 5 just this morning alone.  The good news is that the vast majority of patients are finding positive results with laser therapy.  I have heard from a very small handfull of IPF patients that found no objective or subjective changes, and I still see some with moderate to dramatic positive changes.  I continue to do very well, my last PFT was still better than my first one 6 years ago. I still get laser therapy on a weekly basis and don’t take Ofev or Esbriet.

    Blessings to everyone!!!

    Hi Marsha,

We are all in new territory here with long term laser use.  I honestly can’t say how you will do with laser treatment every two weeks.  I would suggest that you just monitor your progress and see how you do with it.  I continue with weekly treatment because it works well for me, I am maintaining very well.  My concern is that I fear that if we regress I don’t know if we will be able to get back to the level that we were at when we stretch out treatment frequency.  For myself, I don’t want to take that chance, if I slip and get worse I’m afraid that I won’t be able to regain where I am now.  This is a serious and scary disease!   On the other hand I might do just as well at every two weeks or even once a month, but I just don’t know………

Hello Janice, there are several providers in the UK providing laser therapy for IPF patients. I suggest that you go to my office website, summit-chiropractic.com and click on IPF study. You will learn a lot about laser therapy and how and why it works. Laser therapy is NOT a cure but a viable way to manage the disease. The article on my website discusses the importance of laser wavelengths, power, etc. The current protocol is at the end of the article. What is not discussed is the fact that laser eliminates the interleukin 11 that causes the fibrous tissue to form, and this is why patients using laser therapy get little if any more fibrous tissue build up in the lungs. I have no additional ‘honeycombing’ fibrous tissue since starting laser 10 years ago and my O2 remains stable at 97.

    Hello Safa,

Sadly, there are many laser therapy providers in Canada that do not want to provide care to IPF patients due to not being in the ‘scope of practice’. The way to get around that is to not treat the patient for IPF but for ‘inflammation’ which IS under the scope of practice. You may want to go back and talk with the local providers about treating your mom for inflammation. I pray it all goes well for you and your mom!

    Hello Tom Pratt,

Welcome to this wonderful forum.  I have done a search for you and there is one provider right in Greensboro.  There are several others in Winston Salem.  If you email me I can get into some specifics and recommendations.  My email is:  [email protected]

Also know that the vast majority of laser therapy providers have never treated lung conditions, but we are willing to help get them on the right track by providing the current protocol.

I wouldn’t be to hopeful in getting any laser therapy answers from local pulmonologists.  Most of them have never even heard of using laser for PF.  Attitudes of laser vary widely with pulmonologists, some have seen great benefit with it but due to the lack of published studies the majority are simply not familiar with it.  I’ve had to have a very long talk with my pulmonolgist about laser therapy.  He had no clue what it was or what it could do.  But he does say that I should continue doing what I’m doing with it as he has never seen an IPF patient do as well as me in all his years of practice.  I saw him 3 weeks ago and my resting O2 level was 100, best it’s ever been and it’s been 5 years since my IPF diagnosis.

    Marsha,

Thank you for the kind words.  I did reply to Tom and did a search for him.  My reply is awaiting moderation.

Again, I want you to know that I appreciate your sweet words and kindness and helping others along the way.  I want everyone to know that I will help locate laser therapy providers for those that want to undertake laser therapy.  To date we have found providers for over 250 PF patients.  Remarkable how many are doing laser and it’s amazing to see so many respond so well to treatment!

    Blessings to you Marsha!

    Hello Kate,

Pleased to hear you are starting laser!  Sorry it’s taken so long to get to you but I am currently camped in the wilds of Wyoming.  In town now for supplies, etc.  No internet available at camp……

Usually, the protocol is simply printed without converting to a pdf.  I don’t know if you can just print but that’s what I would suggest.  If you are still having problems next week I will be available again on Oct 10 and I can discuss it with my son ( the computer expert) and he will have a solution.

That’s awesome Karen.  I’m curious what your O2 levels were running before starting laser therapy.  I am assuming it was fairly low considering you have been on oxygen.

    Hi Joseph,

I am thrilled to hear of the positive change!  Boy, how the attitudes and acceptance of pulmonologists vary.  Some are like yours, and others are totally for laser therapy.  Go figure.  My pulmonologist totally ‘gets’ laser therapy, knows it helps, but said he would never actually refer a patient out for ‘any alternative care’ and that he is totally allopathic.  Seems weird that a doctor treating a deadly disease wouldn’t recommend something that would help his patients live longer and healthier.  BUT, I bet that if he was to be diagnosed with IPF he would run down to my office as quick as he could for laser therapy!  I considered changing doctors also but the attitude is not going to bother me.  I told mine that because he told me IPF was incurable I was taking responsibility for my own health and treatment and that I was only going to use him for the CT’s and PFT’s that I was going to need to monitor myself.  He didn’t like it…….  but that is exactly what I’m doing.

    Hi Peter,

I honestly don’t know if laser will be helpful for PH and/or Bronchiectasis.  This is all new territory, but I don’t think it would hurt to give laser a try.  I will keep good thoughts for you……

    Hi Linda,

I can tell you that Medicare does not pay for laser.  Some private insurance companies do pay, but generally just a small portion, at least here in Calif.  The best thing to do is to have your doctor’s staff do some checking on it for you.

    Wow Sam,

What a shame!  I would certainly hate for  you to not get laser therapy.  Who knows?  Some pulmonologists dont’ have a problem with laser therapy at all, there is always the outside chance you could get a letter from him. Worth at least trying.  I think all of us in the US are blessed that we don’t have these kinds of problems getting treated.

I’ll keep good thoughts for you……..
