clinical trial studying zinc and nicotinamide riboside
Posted by geodavky on December 28, 2025 at 10:44 amAccording to what I read the clinical trial that is being conducted by Dr. Tanzira Zaman the medical director at Cedars-Sinai Medical center will only be testing the use of zinc and nicotinamide riboside in IPF. Besides taking zinc and nicotinamide riboside some are using NAD+ instead of pure nicotinamide riboside. It is unclear to me if NAD+ is the same as taking just nicotinamide riboside? Both are available from Amazon. Also some are adding beet roots in various forms because Dr. Noble has mentioned that at times. Pulmonologist when asked by patients seem to be mostly taking a wait and see approach before recommending these over the counter products.

Tru Niagen (NR) is in my opinion the most reliable and proven supplement to increase NAD+. According to scientific studies, NAD+ itself is too large a molecule to be absorbed by cells and must be broken down by the body in order to enter cells as NR. Tru Niagen NR has been proven in multiple human trials to be effective at increasing NAD+. NAD+ infusions cause pain and sweats because the body needs to break it down. NR is easily absorbed and effective. Tru Niagen was developed by a company that was originally a supplement testing company, so quality is of the utmost importance to them. They have 3 Nobel Laureates on their board that support their science. I only trust Tru Niagen.

Do you have a link to the study? I have been taking NAD+ for a few years, along with resveratrol and zinc, separately. Knowing the doses the doctor is testing would be a benefit. thanks – steve

For those asking about NAD+, I believe Dr. Zaman said in her presentation that Tru Niagen was suppling it for the trial. They also are not saying what the trial dosage is to avoid any problems with the trial. I have been taking Tru Niagen, zinc and resveratrol (no quercetin due to interaction with Crestor) for a month now based on Sean’s journey. Too early to tell, but things have not gotten worse (I’m also on Ofev).

I’m taking 30 g zinc picolinate every 2 days and 500 mg Nicotinamide riboside daily. I’m hoping this dosage is safe and effective. Thank you. Pls. reply.

As a 76-year-old male, I have been taking 50 mg zinc daily for several years with no issues, regards the NR I am unsure but ill start it next week. It is a good idea to vet again any supplements you take every 6 months or so as new data pops up all the time…

Have you informed your physician and have you had any issues with Ofev while taking the OTCs? I am taking 100mg of Ofev with no side effects for the past 2 mos. Thank you.

Mike I signed up for this trial but was rejected due to the fact the PA is not an inluced State. There are only about 5 states where recruitment is offered. I deleted the email or I would have posted it.

Thanks Mike. I see from your link to the study that Resveratrol is not part of the trial.

Hello PattiPA,
My pulmonologist has been in direct contact with the researcher who initiated the study. He gave her the protocol and she passed it on to me. She said that I could be part of the trial, but if I would prefer to know that I was getting the drug and not a placebo, she would give me the dosages. I get my NAD+ from the company itself. If you sign up for a subscription they give you a substantial discount. The other supplements I buy through Amazon. The protocol is: 600mg Tru Niagen (NAD+) twice a day, 1000 mg trans resveratrol plus- twice per day, and 30mg. zinc once per day. She didn’t indicate if the resveratrol should be taken twice per day or all at once, but I prefer to take it with the True Niagen. If the link that I included works, it is from a man who also uses the protocol along with quercetin. My pulmonologist said she has met him at IPF gatherings along with Dr. Noble from Cedars Sinai, who was the original researcher.

Hi. For the TruNiagen, shouldn’t that be 500 mg, twice daily, as that’s the dosage it comes in? Also, is the number for trans resveratrol correct (2000mg daily)? Isn’t that also 500 mg twice daily for a total of 1000? I’m going by what’s in Sean’s PDF, where he said he found that 1500 mg was safe to take. Thanks.
-
CWS – Sorry, disregard my previous post. I see where you got those dosages.

Hi Mike – would love to connect- having some issues navigating this platform. Yes the tru Niagen pro comes in 500 mg pills. I would take a minimum of 2 pills per day. It’ has been shown to be safe up to 3000 mg per day in safety studies or 6 pills per day. After I took 1000 mg per day for a period I started taking at least 2000 mg per day, for whatever that is worth. Fingers crossed – my health has improved (FVC, cat scan, telomere length, blood oxygen levels) since I began taking all the supplements I list, in combination with OFEV and Nerandomilast. Note that I also made exercise , sleep and diet a priority. This is a devastating and I hope my experience may help others. For folks who haven’t read my write up – my dad passed from IPF and my brother required a transplant – so I’m excited by my results – doing my best to stay healthy and positive- fingers crossed.

For anyone interested i am the chair of three lakes 12-20. Our mission is to accelerate the development of a cure for pulmonary fibrosis. We are in constant contact with researchers, biotechs and pharma in order to decide how to do just that. We have our own working model of disease and are financially supporting a number of human trials, including the zinc plus tru Niagen at cedars Sinai. I am a patient and a family of patients- my dad died from IPF and my brother received a lung transplant a little over 2 years ago. If your interested please visit our website and if you can, please donate – we will use all funds received to fund research towards a cure. https://www.threelakes1220.org

SPT: I am so glad that your markers are getting better. Keep it up!

Hi Sean. Any update on how you’re doing since you increased your TruNiagen dosage? I’m 3 months in on the original dosage and beginning to notice some improvement in my oxygen levels. I’ve got a PFT scheduled in another month, so we’ll see.

I have noticed that people take quercitin along with the other supplements. A word of caution from my physician is that this is contraindicated if you take statins.

I’m taking 30 Mg of zinc picolinate daily and 500 mg Nicotinamide riboside daily. Hoping this is an effective dose.
-
Tru Niagen NR has been shown to be safe up to 3000 mg per day. I take between 2000 mg and 3000 mg per day. Zinc has been shown to be safe up to 50 mg per day – so that’s what I take.

Hi. I have read your story. Thank you for all you do for the IPF patients. My pulmonologist from UCSD, Dr. Joshua, said that she has met you at one of the gatherings as well as meeting Dr. Nobel. The information that she gave me about the trial was from Dr. Nobel. She said that it was 2 – 300 mg True Niagen (600 two times per day) total of 1200mg, 30mg of zinc, and 1,000mg trans resveratrol. Did you decide on your own to tweak the dosages, or were you told that your dose is the result of their research? The pills that I take from True Niagen come in 300mg, so I take 4 per day…Thank you and I wish you a happier healthier New Year.

Are you taking those doses and ofev. Wondering if there are any side effects or contraindications with ofev.
-
I getting deliv. of the Nicotin today. I have been on OFEV for over 1 year. I will reply about any issues. Tx.
-
I am on OFEV, Jascayd and tru Niagen (NR) Resveratrol and Quercetin.

To: Patty P. and others: I started taking 500 MG Nicotinate Ribo and 30 MG zinc picolinate today. I plan to take the 500 mg NR every day and the zinc every other day. Those who are taking the full dose of 500mg NR 2 x per day and the full zinc dose daily pls let me know of any reactions /side effects. I’m taking Ofev 100MG 2 X per day for well over a year. Good luck and God Bless.Thank you.
-
I have not had any additional side effects from taking the supplements with OFEV – the OFEV has had its own issues which are the same for me with or without the supplements

Just an FYI, reservatrol is contraindicated if you are taking a statin. Brst to che k with your physican before using any OTC’s.

Hey Folks, Why not try to take part in the trial so we can all share in the research? I urge you to watch the PF Warriors presentation about the research study. Dr Zaman does an excellent presentation. Pay particular attention to where she talks about things that were attempted with negative consequences. This is a short research study of only 6-8 months.

I agree – anyone able to enter the trial – please if you would! I am a participant in the Jascayd trial extension- I’ve been on that trial for a couple of years as entering trials is the best way to help move the search for a cure forward! Anyone entering this trial is a true hero –

I started Tru-Niagen Nicotinamide Riboside (500 mg) twice daily, Zinc picolinate (30 mg) once daily and Resveratrol (500 mg) twice daily a month ago. I also take a multi-vitamin that has another 15mg of zinc. I am also on Ofev and have been for a few years. I have had no side effects from the new supplements. However, I will say that unlike many people, I also have very little side effects from Ofev. I am on oxygen 24/7 and while an improvement like SPT experienced would be great, I’m just hoping that this, along with the Ofev will keep my oxygen needs from increasing.

Is this the correct one from Amazon?
Tru Niagin Pro NAD+ 1000mg 2 500mg servings?
-
I was advised by my pulmonologist to take 2 of the Tru Niagen 300mg two times per day. (a total of 1200mg per day). I buy it online from the company…subscribe to it and save. I believe Amazon carries it as well.

Hi Sean, I was diagnosed 3 years ago near my 80th birthday. I go to Mayo at Rochester yearly but the doctor has said it’s too early to put me on medication. (???) I read your excellent paper and am now following the supplement protocol listed. I’m curious as to why you increased the Niagen to 2000mg. Just intuition or was there any basis? I have had a screening interview with Tanzira and hoping to be eligible for the clinical trial. If not, is there any other role I could play to support the research?
Thank you for all you have done and are doing.
