• Runny nose

Posted by G53 on May 3, 2025 at 12:40 pm

I was diagnosed with IPF in 2015. Currently on O2 24/7. I try to walk at least 3 days a week need 8Lpm so I’m dragging the tank now. Being on so much oxygen my nose is constantly running (yes my feet smell too so I’m all mixed up!). Anyway with the runny nose it causes me to do a lot of mouth breathing. Has anyone else had this issue and is there a way to reduce it? As an encouragement for us who deal with this disease, “My grace is sufficient for you, for <b style=”font-family: inherit; font-size: inherit; -webkit-text-size-adjust: 100%;”>My strength is made perfect in weakness.”

Yes. Whenever I over exert. After recovering I sometimes use iptotropium spray. I also have allergies so I get the spray for that.

I have idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis. I too have ‘post nasal drip’ which I understand is a side effect from taking Ofev. I also have ‘silent GORD/GERD’ which can also be a side effect of Ofev, I believe.

    Happy Days!

Your O2 provider may have a mask you can use instead of a cannula to help you while walking. All my life, my nose could randomly plug some, so the small mask with a hole in it helps when I need O2 and my nose says nope.

    Stay well…

I was diagnosed in 2019 with SSc/ILD and my nose has run all day, every day for a couple of years. I’ve tried every possible allergy med and spray with no luck. However, I started Ipratropium Bromide several months ago and it’s been a life-saver. I had a nose bleed when I used the prescribed squirts so I dropped down to one squirt in each nostril morning and night and that does the trick. Make sure you blow your nose good before using, and try to go 15 or so minutes without blowing your nose after the squirts to give it time to work. That works for me. Good luck..

My doctor prescribed ipratropium bromide for my runny nose and it works great. Zyrtec and Claritin were not effective at all. Claritin D worked but also prevented my ability to urinate after taking it for a couple of days. No side effects of the ipratropium bromide so far. Each application lasts 6 hrs then just spray again.

I was diagnosed in August 2023. I have a runny nose every day especially in the morning. It is so aggravating. I use allergy meds and perscription nose spray. It does not help. My breathing is also worst in the mornings.

Hi.. I am also on O2 24/7 after a recent hospitalization for pneumonia and hate my running faucet nose. So far, I have been unsuccessful with sprays as they give me nosebleeds as well. I do take a child’s dose of NyQuil at night and the Benadryl in it shuts down the faucet and helps me sleep. It usually lasts much of the next day as well. The Dr added moisture to my concentrator and is hoping that will help with the dryness. I am considering the child dose of Claritin (or something like that) for breakthrough hours.

I like Steve-Rago’s response. A mask will allow you to breathe through your mouth if your nose is running. Otherwise, you can do what I have done – bring tissue and keep it moving. Tilt your head back a bit?

Two things: How long does your tank last when using 8L? Is there a mask that can be used for sleeping with a concentrator? I am on 7L.

Along with ipratropium bromide, my husband also uses Flonase as suggested by his ENT.

In addition, using the Neti Pot saline solutions rinses once to twice a day helps tremendously . distilled water a must! He also does 5 sprays of Flonase in the Neti Pot when it’s really bad – ENT suggested this. It took a little adjustment period to be comfortable with the Neti Pot but he is sold on it. Also for dry nose use AYR nasal gel sold over the counter another ENT suggestion
