My husband and I are both retired RNs. We met in the ED 17 years ago. Our life together has been wonderful. We are both a little whacky! Two months after my husband (Bill) retired he got really, really sick. The worst flu symptoms I’d ever seen and difficulty breathing which was new for him. We went to Urgent Care and the flu swab was negative. But his chest X-ray was strange. No pneumonia. Just what appeared to be scarring nearly 1/2 up on both sides. SpO2 was 88%!!! This was November 2019. Since then it’s been CXRs, PFTs (which he fails) and increasing SOB. He is now on round the clock O2. This is a man who was VERY active. Has never smoked a day in his life. He still tries to be active doing chores around the house and even went back to work 1-2 days a week at the Coumadin clinic sticking fingers, counseling patients and administering medications. So far so good. But I must say this diagnosis of Pulmonary Fibrosis feels like a death sentence for us both.
