Managing oxygen tubing hacks
Posted by Community Member on March 26, 2025 at 8:27 amPulmonary fibrosis patients frequently become frustrated with managing oxygen tubing. I know I did.
I had an issue with the tubing kinking on a portable oxygen concentrator (POC). One of the hacks I used, especially with a POC, was to take a pipe cleaner and spiral it around the tubing near the connection to the POC. The pipe cleaners were rigid enough to prevent kinking, and they were inexpensive, allowing me to discard them after a single use.
What oxygen hacks can you share here?

MemberMarch 28, 2025 at 6:12 pmMy only tip: for my home POC i use a 7’ cannula. For my portable (shopping, etc) i use a 4’ onefor less tangling in tge cart and cooler. I don’t use the home POC except at night, so i don’t need the 25’ of tubing (phew)

MemberApril 30, 2025 at 5:29 pmLKU is correct Using longer than a 4 foot tubing on a portable oxygen concentrator is a a tripping hazard. I even use a 2 foot long one on my portable and it works great. Does anyone have a tip for keeping the twists and kinks out of a 7 foot cannula on a stationary oxygen machine?

MemberMay 31, 2025 at 3:03 pmI am thankful for all of the suggestions here. I’m brand new to needing a POC (lucky me, right ??!🙄) and don’t know anything about best sources for accessories. I quickly discovered that the 7 ft tubing that came with my unit (Inogen Rove 4) is way too long and would like to know where you buy the 4 ft. I’m not confident about buying something like this on Amazon without a recommendation… some products get awful reviews. Thanks for any advice you all can offer!!!

MemberMay 3, 2025 at 9:35 amMy son bought some plastic. Spiral plastic tubing from Amazon that is a game changer for my 25ft. Tube keeping the kinks out. However, it does take a bit of time to get it on and if you do spring a leak you have to take it off and put it onto the new tubing! Still worth it!

MemberFebruary 6, 2026 at 10:52 pmI would be interested to see what your son found on Amazon. I require 25 ft also. I bought 1/4″ and 1/2″ from a manufacturer (not Amazon but available there) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0CS2TCHRJ?ref=cm_sw_r_ud_dp_JPYMJXDZWDVZSF04PAEQ&ref_=cm_sw_r_ud_dp_JPYMJXDZWDVZSF04PAEQ&social_share=cm_sw_r_ud_dp_JPYMJXDZWDVZSF04PAEQ&language=en-US&previewDoh=1&th=1. The manufacturer said patients reported it best to cut the 25′ in 5′ segments which I did. When I finally threaded the tubing through the 25′ (not easy), it kinked at every 5′ and for that or an unknown reason there was no liter flow. I am constantly getting myself tangled in the tubing and would appreciate any info you might offer based on your experience. And if your son chose another product please let me know what it is. Thanks!
