Over the holiday weekend, I changed the oil in my Polaris Ranger. This task, before IPF and my transplant, would have been a 15-20 minute task. This time it took about 90 minutes. The heat and humidity got me.

The message here is not about how long it took me, but that I did it. Sure, it took longer than it might have taken earlier in my life, but I am okay taking my time.

What task do you miss being able to do? Have you been able to find an adaptive way to complete a task?

I miss walking freely, no oxygen to plan for and haul around. I’ve adapted chores like laundry by sitting down and having front load machines help! Sitting down to dress.

I miss thinking excitedly about all the things my wife (the IPF patient) and I were going to do in the future

It has taken me two weeks to complete the 50 hour service on my tractor and zero turn mower. Plus, add a hydraulic top link and hydraulic side link to my tractor. 10 years ago I could complete those tasks easily in a morning. Whenever possible I buy power tools to make those tasks easier. The thing I miss most is walking the perimeter of my property. Haven’t done that in nearly two years. It’s only about two miles, but it’s very steep terrain. My doctors are telling me to use my power wheelchair and rollorator walker more. I refuse to surrender, but I must accept my limitations.
