Explaining Oxygen Therapy for Pulmonary Fibrosis Patients

In this animated video from Boehringer Ingelheim Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis, the body’s need for a constant supply of oxygen is explained and how oxygen therapy works for pulmonary fibrosis patients.

Find out more about how oxygen therapy is used in treating pulmonary fibrosis.

The film describes how each cell, tissue, and organ within the body needs oxygen from the bloodstream to survive, and that pulmonary fibrosis and other lung diseases can affect the amount of oxygen transferred from the lungs to other parts of the body. This can result in the patient needing to have oxygen therapy to provide the necessary levels of oxygen to the bloodstream. The film explains three different ways that oxygen therapy can be delivered and how it’s decided which ones a PF patient would use.

I came within 5 minutes of dying..due to inhaling the fibers from burlap ribbon. I was in the hospital for 18 days and in inpatient rehab facility for 35 days. I am on oxygen 24 / 7. This all happened in 2015…I finally got my portable concentrator today. I think it will give me more freedom…
Your article was a great help to my understanding my Pulmonary Fibrosis a little more..thank you…

The only time I feel Short of Breath is when I am bending over or exerting myself. But my pulse ox can drop significantly and I don’t feel it. My last 6 minute test determined I needed 2L. A few weeks ago after taking a shower I realized my pulse ox was 82. So I upped the 02 to 3 L. when showering, changing clothes etc. Also 3L still leaves me with a deficit after my shower. I really worry about this as this has been a significant change in my 02 need and I really don’t like raising the Liters. Any suggestions, ideas? I haven’t told my pulmonary doc about this. The VA knows cause the 02 company notified them and I am due for another test. Unfortunately we are snowed in right now.
    Thanks
