Bernabé Williams Sr. was a major influence in his son’s life and was the one who encouraged him to play baseball. He also taught Bernie how to play the guitar, which would become his second career following his retirement from the sporting world. Losing his father to IPF had a profound effect on Bernie and he knew he had to do something to help others struggling with the same illness.
Williams Sr. passed away from the disease in 2001 and since then Bernie has been an advocate for the disease, increasing awareness through his Breathless Campaign in conjunction with Boehringer Ingelheim.
