Some of you may have previously read that I was away in New York City last week with my Mom for vacation. We had a wonderful time!

My take on life generally, is that its about ongoing learning and personal development: always striving to be better than the person I was yesterday. Believe me – that hasn’t been easy since my diagnosis of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) in 2016, but I do dry. Some days are better than others, and I admit: I’ve definitely had days where I am not at my best. Learning to live with a life-threatening illness as a young adult has been one of the most difficult things I’ve ever done and I’ve certainly not mastered it yet. However, I try to take things I’ve learnt along the way and embrace them going forward.

My Mom and I knew this would be a special trip for both of us, and we also knew we’d have to balance my physical abilities/fatigue with all the things we wanted to do and we knew there was a chance we wouldn’t fit it all in. Thankfully, we were able to achieve everything we wanted and really spent quality time together on this trip. While we were away only for a short time, the quality of our time together means more to me than the quantity. I wanted to go longer, but my doctors said that wouldn’t be wise and at first I was disappointed with this but it turned out to be a gift. This is a lesson I’ve had to embrace since my diagnosis, as none of us really know the length (quantity) of time we have left with this chronic lung disease. One of the biggest lessons/gifts that IPF has taught me is the importance of focusing on quality moments vs. quantity. My Mom and I will never forget this trip, and we’re both so glad we took a “risk” (travelling with a lung disease can be scary) and went to NYC last week!

What are some of the most important/biggest lessons you’ve learnt since your diagnosis of IPF/PF?

What lessons would you encourage others to be open to learning about, after being diagnosed with IPF/PF?

I’d love to hear from you!
