Will a regular CT scan show fibrosis or does it need to be HRCT?  I have read those can still miss something like 33% of cases.  I am 46, morbidly obese with severe sleep apnea and have been on cpap for 4 years.  Is biopsy only way to definitively exclude or confirm diagnosis?  I think I am very high risk for biopsy.  If a HRCT is normal would you think I would be negative for pulmonary fibrosis?

I think an HRCT is pretty good at diagnosing IPF.  My pulmonologist wanted me to have a lung biopsy to be sure.  After the biopsy confirmed IPF, I went to National Jewish Hospital in Denver for a 2nd opinion, & they didn’t think the biopsy was necessary.
