Last week I wrote a column following the 6-year anniversary date of being diagnosed with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF). In some respects, that day (April 7th, 2016) feels like it was just yesterday and in others, it feels like a lifetime ago!

While the 3-to-5 year prognosis for those living with IPF is outdated, it’s sometimes hard not to consider those numbers. Having surpassed the latter half of my prognosis this year, I had a lot of emotions connected to this year’s diagnosis date. To counter those emotions, I spent time reflecting on all the things I’ve still been able to do in these six years, as opposed to focusing on what I can’t. I also spent time revisiting the goals of my column for PF News and why it’s so meaningful to me, along with being able to moderate these forums. After that reflection, I went out to treat myself for a little self-care.

I’m curious to hear from others about their diagnosis anniversaries:

    • Do you acknowledge your diagnosis date each year, or prefer to avoid it?
    • If you acknowledge it, what types of things do you do? Do you do them alone or with friends/family/partners?
    • What are some of the feelings you have each year on your diagnosis anniversary?
