  • Taking Ofev and issues with Grapefruit and CBD oil

When I first started taking Ofev (100mg) about 3 months ago, I was told by the Pharmacist to avoid eating grapefruit, I was also told this when I started taking a statin (Crestor) a month later. I asked the pharmacist if taking CBD oil would pose a problem, and he said there haven’t been enough studies to say one way or the other.

I had been taking CBD oil for osteoarthritis and significant problems with knee flexion a little before I started the Ofev. The CBD tincture and gummies have been helping me in numerous ways – such as a better mindset with living with IPF, increased focus, sleeping much better through the night, increased ability to do my rather uncomfortable PT exercises for my knee and reduced pain, and maybe help with preventing side effects from the Ofev (less clear). I try to keep the CBD dose low so that I don’t get high but enough so that my mood is elevated (the CBD does contain some THC – but it is rather a low amount). So far, I haven’t had any side effects from the Ofev and all my liver function tests have been normal. I get another round of PFTs in a few days and I’m hoping to increase the Ofev dose to 150mg.

However, I recently found some information about CBD stating, “Don’t take or (discuss with your MD) if you are taking any medicine that interacts with grapefruit.” This was unsettling as both Ofev and Crester have this warning. The obvious thing is to stop taking the CBD and tell my pulmonologist about this issue. However, I’ve gotten many benefits from CBD and I’m reluctant to throw out my rather expensive bottles of CBD just yet. I’m hoping that since I’m still in the early stage of IPF and more or less asymptomatic, I can use up the CBD and then stop taking the CBD – likely in a couple more months.

I’m curious if anyone else has faced this issue. I’m sure most people will likely say something like, “Don’t be crazy, stop the CBD now.” That clearly would be sensible. But I’m guessing that my writing about this here will help me make the right decision and hopefully be helpful to anyone else who is taking Ofev and is taking or considering CBD. So, I saw my pulmonologist today and I came clean about my CBD use. I was surprised that he was ok with it and even said that he had a few other patients who used it without problems. He didn’t think the concern about the liver enzymes and Ofev was worrisome enough to prevent the CBD use – (although he didn’t say this – I’m assuming this would be only as long as I didn’t overdo it) He did say that smoking it in any form (vaping, etc) would be a very bad idea. I told him that if I did run into any problems with Ofev that I’d stop taking the CBD. Anyway, my knees and squirrely anxious brain is very pleased and thought I’d share this here.
