I have read about several research studies for drugs for IPF. Some of them discuss a mechanism of injury in IPF being scar tissue caused by or consisting of collagen. In these discussions, they say that once an area of the lung suffers injury or damage, that a natural healing process is for the body to send collagen fibers to the area of damage to build scar tissue to assist in the repair of the injury. These discussions mentioned that in IPF people get an overproduction of collagen and that IPF patients lack the enzyme or enough of the enzyme that dissolves the scarring after the healing take place.

I have seen advertisements about the treatment of Duprachens Contractions that are caused by build up of scar tissue. These contractures are treated by the drug xiaflex, which helps dissolve the scars that cause tendons in the hand to contract. After reading this, I couldn’t help but wonder if xiaflex might be helpful in the treatment of IPF. The drug has collagenase clostridium as it’s active ingredient. I’m no Doctor, but I believe collagenase is a natural enzyme that dissolves collagen, an clostridium is a bacterium that occurs naturally in the human bowel.

Has anyone else heard of this? Does anyone know who I should contact to inquire if this could help in IPF, and who might be interested in researching this as a possible treatment for IPF?
