7% saline and mucus
Posted by June on December 31, 2025 at 3:41 pmSome say that 7% hypertonic saline should not be used if there’s no mucus production. What if I still get relief from it after the mucus has cleared? Can I continue to use daily? Thank you for reading.

Hi June,
If your care team prescribed the solution and knows what other medications you may be taking, this is best answered by your care team. In my post-transplant world, I have several over-the-counter medications that are prescribed with specific instructions on how to take them. Some of those instructions read “as needed”.

Hi Sam! Actually this wasn’t prescribed but I used it due to high mucus production. I’ve since expelled quite a bit and i’m not sure where to go after I feel better. Some say to continue using in case some bacteria still remains. And then there’s the doctors who say not to use if there’s no sputum coming up. I’m sure there are people out there with more information on this.

Hi June, not sure if you use saline through your nostrils. My ENT prescribed I use saline packet in a squeeze bottle of purified water. I spray this in my nostrils and I get comfort for the hours I am sleeping.

I’m such a dodo head. I should have mentioned that i’m nebulizing the saline. So saline is getting into my lungs. Which spray bottle do you use for nasal?

It may not be correct and for safety not a doctor but been using reg sea salt for sinus since back in the 70’s with warm water slightly above body temp and never measured salinity but guess around 4-5 percent as it was ocean water that first stopped my mucus issues and sinus headache. The same for sore throat gargle except hotter.

I should have mentioned that i’m nebulizing the saline, so saline goes into lungs. But i’m glad sea water type saline helps you. That’s basically what I am doing but for the lungs. I’m unsure if 7% is even saltier than sea water.

I was prescribed albuterol through my nebulizer and had no relief, but did get headaches. After one severe mucous incident, the doc added saline to the mix. This gave me mucous relief. I now use the combo “as needed” for relief. It’s self-medication but helps with intermittent heavy mucous.
