Hi Frank,  I have a stationary machine that will produce two and up to 10 liters. continuous flow.  I set it on 4 liters when lounging and crank it up to 6 liters when I’m active (such as going to the basement (stairs).  When you’re short of breath it’s natural to grasp for air through your mouth.  You just have to concentrate on inhaling through your nose and exhale out your mouth.  Hard, but deep breathing, in and out, several times a day should help develop a good breathing habit.

    Best wishes,

Sorry to hear  of your Mothers condition.  I’m 82 years old and have had this progressive condition for five years,  With the concentrator set at 4 L/m, My SPO2 level is around 96 when I’m relaxed, in a sitting position.  When I rise to go to the bathroom it can drop to the low 80’s.  Taking a number of deep breaths through the nose before rising helps.

When I go downstairs, to my hobby room, I set the concentrator at 6 L/m, while still using a nasal cannula.  After I slowly walk back up the stairs, I reset the concentrator back to 4 L/m.  If I leave it on 6 L/m I develop severe nose bleeding, even though I use saline spray mist.

I wish your Mother could be seen by a Pulmonologist as they specialize in treating lung diseases.  I’ve ask my Pulmonologist to be frank with me and hold nothing back.  He gave me approximately 5 years to live with this disease and I know I’m about at the end of this life.  I’m very comfortable with the thought of dying as I’ve lived a long and happy life.  I now look forward to meeting my Lord and Savior.

Yes, we all should be able to openly discuss the end of life as it’s a road we all must travel, with no exceptions.  I’m going on eighty two years of age and have been living with the progression of this disease for around 5 years.  In the last year I’ve been hospitalized twice with pneumonia and on Oxygen 24/7.  The last being a ten day stay in September where they gave me no hope with a fifty/fifty guess of recovery.   I had one Doctor tell  me,  ” Well, you know, it is what it is”.  So much for the encouraging words …LOL

I openly except my fate, with no fear of death.  What sustains me is my faith and trust in the Lord Jesus.  And yes, I understand others may travel a different road and I respect that.  I’ve  lived a long and blessed life. What pains me deeply is seeing so many young people with this dreaded disease.   I pray that a cure is soon discovered for them.

  • Being as I’m eighty years old I don’t hold any hope for this medicine. Three years ago I was diagnosed with IPF, 35% reduced lung capacity and given a 5 year life expectancy. I was given a prescription of 300mg Ofev and the side effects were unbearable. The pomologist reduced the Ofev to 100mg and I’m tolerating that ok although the price went up a thousand dollars a month for the lighter dosage. So far I’m not on oxygen and lead an extremely active life having to sit down and “recharge” frequently. I exercise quite heavily and it seems to help. Check with your doctor to be sure your heart will tolerate exercise.

I’m convinced there will be no scaring treatment for me but I hope and pray that there will be a medication developed for you younger folks. God has blessed me with a full and happy life. Now, having come down with this disease in my twilight years, I have no complaints. Best wishes to all and God bless.
