Back in December, I wrote a forum post about a book I’d been reading which is called The Life-Changing Magic of Not Giving a F*ck: A Practical Parody. In that post, I talked about how helpful I’ve found this book due to its practicality, along with how easy it is to apply the principles to your every day life. It was a great book to read just ahead of the new year as I’ve been implementing a lot of it as part of my resolutions this year!

One of the things that has been most helpful for me in determining whether or not I want to invest my mental or physical energy in something is to ask myself whether or not the ‘task at hand’ annoys me or brings me joy. When I am flustered with something, or it is bothering me on a mental, social or physical level, I ask myself: does this annoy or bring me joy? If the answer is the former, I really try to just set it aside and not focus on it. This has been really helpful in allowing myself to determine whether or not something is worth my time and energy, and it is so easy.

Through this forum, I’d previously alluded to the struggles I was having at my place of work and how those issues were sucking every ounce of mental, emotional and physical energy out of me throughout the day. Once the new year began, I vowed to no longer let this happen as no job is worth your happiness and sanity. After all, anyone is indispensable! In an effort to ensure this doesn’t happen again, and I don’t get to the place I was in before the holidays, I’ve decided to implement this “annoy vs. bring joy” question specifically to many work tasks that arise. So far, it has been really helpful in that context as well.

For those of you who struggle with letting things bother them (this isn’t a weakness, oftentimes it means you care) : do you think you could apply this question to helping you be less bothered?

Do you have any other strategies to help you determine where to invest your emotional, mental or physical energy?
