Recently, Pulmonary Fibrosis News published an article referencing a study about patients with pulmonary fibrosis (PF) and lung transplantation. More specifically, the study examined whether a single or double lung transplant was more successful in patients with PF, and at what age(s).

The results of this retrospective study showed that double lung transplants have higher survival rates for patients with PF who are under 70 years old, compared to single lung transplants. In this study, survival is referenced as a five-year survival rate, where those who had a double lung transplant were more likely to reach this milestone than those with a single lung transplant.

As one might expect, there are many different variables that would contribute to the success of a double lung transplant in patients with PF due to the complexity of such a surgery. Interestingly, one of those factors includes the presence of pulmonary hypertension (PH) and how this might impact a single vs. double lung transplant. More research is required on this topic to identify its effects on each procedure.

Another interesting conclusion from the study is that the 10-year survival in patients with a double lung transplant was 55%, whereas it was 32% in patients who received a single lung transplant.

I found this study both scary and informative, and would encourage others considering lung transplantation to read the full study here.

Have any of you received or known someone who has received a single lung transplant? How are they doing?

Has any of your doctors reiterated similar information to this (ie. double lung transplant being more successful than single) when talking to you about lung transplantation options?
