George, my original diagnosis was Hypersensitivity Pneumonitis – auto immune disease. Over the past 10 years IPF and Pulmonary Fibrosis have been added to the list. I have been on Ofev for some time and also take Mycophenolat 500mg – 2 tablets twice a day. Since it appears to be an auto immune disease I have continued taking this immunosuppressant. My doctor would prefer I take 3 tablets twice a day but I am small so changed to 2. You can do an internet search on Mycophenolat and it might help you decide. I go along with my doctors but had Covid over Christmas and have had a drastic change causing me to be on Oxygen 24 hours a day. I am also using an AirVo 2 humidifier hooked up to my two concentrators. This forces warm air into my body. While I think the Ofev and Mycophenolat are standard treatment I feel they are all they have to work with at the moment. Apparently there are trials on other forms of treatment that could well work better but they have not been released for general use. Now, I believe that exercise can help strengthen our lungs.

    These are simply my thoughts.

I suggest your father-in-law smoke outside. He doesn’t have to like it. The nursing home might have a porch area where he can smoke.

Medicare will help with one home concentrator. They won’t add a portable unit. Maybe more help if on Medicade.

I spent $300 on the Masimo that Noah Greenspan likes – it may be my circulation but it takes a long time to get a reading. The less expensive ones do better.

Before he flies it would be a good idea to get a High-Altitude Simulations Test (HAST) to confirm it is safe. The airlines are not happy with people who get on a flight and then need oxygen they could have planned for. It could hurt your return flight.

Kim, I have had 4 Covid shots, the last one in October. I had the flu and rsv shots earlier. In late December I was feeling weary and my oxygen was dropping during the day. No fever, no sore throat, but a bad cough.

I have only needed additional oxygen when sleeping or flying but my oxygen was going down and I needed my portable concentrator. I went to the ER and was told I had Covid. I also take an immunosupressant and could not be given the paxlovid. It was still early enough in the diagnosis that I could have remdesivir which is given in an IV – once daily for four days. I was in the hospital through Christmas. It never got any worse but the cough is hanging on and I will be going in for a 6 minute walk. I feel the October booster kept me from having it worse. I’m going to put my bet on the science.
