If the lung function in patients with chronic lung disease such as pulmonary fibrosis declines too much, they may need to undergo a lung transplant. In this amusing animated video from Alt Shift X shared in June 2013, we look at lung transplants and what role the immune system plays in accepting or rejecting transplanted lungs.

The film explains the matching process donors go through and how the immune system needs to be suppressed so that it won’t reject the new lungs. It details some of the immunosuppressant drugs that lung transplant recipients will need to take for the rest of their lives and how they were discovered.
