What hobbies help you escape PF?
Posted by Samuel Kirton on March 11, 2025 at 9:00 amWhat hobbies do you have that are a distraction from living with pulmonary fibrosis?
I have long been a ham radio operator. I do enjoy speaking with people around the world from my home without using the internet.
Do you have a way to escape living with pulmonary fibrosis?

I enjoy shooting. I have my own range on my property and try to get some trigger time daily.

Sporting Clays along with Skeet and Trap are good outdoor hobbies that require little exertion. You can take a cart at most sporting clays places.
Bocce is always a limited exertion game. It is not easy to excel but we have a frail 94 year old who is a champion and very accurate with a bocce ball.

Two of my favorite sports are Sporting Clays and Skeet. At the top of my bucket list was to have my own Skeet Range on my property. Two years ago I made that dream come true. I had it done up correctly and it is a regulation range. I’ve got voice actuated remotes. My favorite skeet guns are Browning XS Skeet over/under shotguns in 20ga and 28ga. I had Graco add their custom upgrades to the butt stocks.
My problem is that I get fatigued very quickly. Hopefully now that spring is here I’m gonna try to shoot a bit more.
For Sporting Clays I have Browning Feather XS Sporting Clays over/under models. 28ga being my favorite of the guns I have for Skeet and Sporting Clays.

I make art. I love to paint in watercolours and acrylic. You loose yourself in it. Forget about all your problems

I love building Lego, in gives me great joy to be able to show and share with my children and grandchildren my latest creation.

My husband likes to fly his drone. He can sit on the deck in the backyard or we can go for a ride to the beach or lake.

I spend endless hours doing watercolor paintings. I generally use reference photos I’ve taken on various trips over the years or simply from walks in my neighborhood. It gives me the joy of both memories and being creative. I also do clay sculpting, which is lots of fun. And from time to time, I pull out my violin which I love, but can play only for short times.

I am learning woodworking. I did carpentry (not professionally) but that is a bit too physical now.
I am also tying fishing flies again. That is well within my energy level.

I try to get out and fish local or even fly my radio-controlled airplanes when I’m feeling up to it. Seems like it’s getting harder and harder to do and really hard to plan because of how I might happen to feel at that time. Heck it’s even getting harder and harder to do what needs to be done around the house. Oh well it is still great knowing that there’s a chance to get out.

You and I do share the same interests. I flew RC for several years and then kind of got out of it. But I would like to possibly get back into flying electrics instead of fuel. But then I think what I have the energy to go fetch the plane When I land it. I was wondering about woodworking though I’ve done that quite a bit over the years and I’m concerned about the dust portion of it as to whether it would bother me or not. I was diagnosed with PF back in September of last year and I’ve stayed fairly steady since then. I guess wearing a good mask would be the answer to that. but I would have to stretch my oxygen hose from the house out into the shop, which could be done. I do still manage to fish but not as much.

Motorcycle was my sanity/escape and had to sell since I become tired more easily. Started to learn photography and plan to take grandkids fishing when the weather cooperates. Also, just joined a local chess club that encourages beginners (like me).
