Person-first language matters because it acknowledges that an individual’s disability or disease is only a part of their identity. It often feels as though a person’s disease is who they are, especially in the hospital setting where patients are often quantified or triaged by what is “wrong” with them. Using language that prioritizes the person, e.g. a person living with PF vs. a PF patient, helps remind them, and others, that they are more than just their chronic illness.

Have you heard the term “person-first language” before? How does it make you feel when people do or don’t use it when they talk to you?
