• NEW TO PIRFENIDONE

I was on Ofev for 2 years. Due to side effects and no longer eligible to get it free I’m starting Pirfenidone. My concern is that if I can’t tolerate it, can I just stop taking it or do I have to wean off slowly. .

I’ve been on pirfenidone for over a year now, and the first few months were tough. I am also Type 2 diabetic and 14 or so years ago had a quadruple bipass. The GI problems i had with pirfenidone almost made me give up on using it, BUT, I had earlier suspicions that my Synjardy (diabetes) Rx was not a good match for me; BTW, Synjardy is not a trendy diabetic weight-loss drug. I lost 67 pounds and hard difficulty eating 15 grams of protein for each pirfenidone dose. So, igave up on Synjardy.

I now have minimal GI issues with pirfenidone, and, possibly due to weight loss, need no diabetes meds to maintain an ACH less than 5.8. I’ve gained back 30 of the pounds which make my primary physician and pulmonologist happy.

So, while the available IPF drugs have their issues, don’t give up until you’ve looked at all the other chemicals you are throwing into your body.
