I have extreme productive coughing after eating. My doctor said it is from food aspiration and suggests a fundoplication procedure where
the lower part of the esophagus is wrapped around the top of the stomach and stapled. Food or fumes would not be able to go back to the lungs. You would have to eat small portions. I am still researching but need something done to help me.

I wish I could take gabapentin for productive cough – IPF. However, it greatly affects my essential tremor and I shake badly, including internal tremor.

I have tremendous coughing and mucus/phlegm after eating, 20 minutes.  I have IPF.  My pulmonologist says it is from GERD and asperates up through the esophagus.  I have to wait two months to see a gastroenterologist.  Anyone have any info?

I also have had the intense mucus cough, especially after eating.  Two barium swallow tests proved negative for aspiration.  However, a bronchoscopy showed bile entering the esophagus and causing aspiration of the lungs.   Suggested remedy – fundoplication.  Wrapping top part of stomach around the base of esophagus and tighten.  The side effects of never being able to vomit or belch, have much gas and bloating, eating 5-6 times a day and a very restrictive diet is turning me away from this surgery.   Has anyone had this surgery and did it help the mucus cough?  I can’t imagine living the rest of my life with this constant cough and using sheets of paper towels and kleenex.

Has anyone read the recommended time to wait before eating in the morning?  I have seen 1 hour to 4 hours on posts.  Four hours seems like a long time to wait after fasting through the night.  Also – decaf vs. caffeine.  Caffeine makes my essential tremor off the wall, so I ordered decaf.  I wonder if  taking the decaf affects the effectiveness.  Anyone know?

I change my cannula when it starts to feel stiff.  And, I have a hint for uncoiling the 50′ green tubing from always tangling around your feet.  When I first open the package, I put the tubing in the dryer for just a few seconds until it feels softer, and then lay it out flat the length of the tubing.  Problem solved and fewer worries about getting tangled and falling.
