Golf
Posted by Robert B on March 18, 2025 at 3:03 pmI play golf a couple of times a week. I don’t breathe well but I ride in a car and play in a men’s league so they put us on teams. It is easier not having to play your own ball.
I also started singing in the church choir about 3 years ago and it help me to strengthen my breathing.

That’s cool you play golf and sing in a choir. I’ve noticed my breathing gets challenged on mild activities too, especially if I’m not doing regular exercise. Singing definitely helps, though, I joined a local group for a while and noticed my lung capacity improved a bit too, just from learning to control my breath better.

Golf is a great way to get some walking exercise even with a cart. Putting makes me hyperventilate but that is correctible. Singing has been mentioned as a lung strength enhancer. I would encourage everyone to check out “The Breather” on Amazon ($54). It is basically a lightweight hand-held “home gym for your lungs”. It has separate adjustments for inhaling and exhaling. Professional singers use this device or one like it. Amazon has several variations from which to choose. It is a great tool for the cost of a dozen golf balls. I highly recommend it.

I have stopped playing golf because mt breathing has gotten worse almost overnight. Do you guys that are still playing wear your oxygen machine while swinging your club ?
Thanks,

I’m also working on respiratory health lately, especially since I found some devices for breath training at https://omhale.com/. There’s useful info if you want to try more breathing exercises for sports and singing.

Thanks for sharing this resource link @jaymead, I’m sure it will be helpful for others’ looking into strengthening their respiratory health. There’s some great apps to help with this too!
As for the question about golfing with oxygen, I’ve done this! I have a small D-sized tank that I strap into a backpack and have played golf this way. No one was bothered by it and although I was tired by the end of the day due to the heat and walking (even with a cart), it was very manageable. Using a tank vs a POC is of course dependent on your oxygen needs but if you enjoy golf, I’d definitely consider this option. Good luck!
Charlene.
